A1 level: Beginner – The Teacher Says is the same game as Simon Says. A fun and active way to review vocabulary. It’s a perfect game for a family game night too.
Starting a command with “The Teacher says” means that the players must obey that command.
Commands without the beginning “Simon says” means do not do this action.
Anyone who breaks one of these two rules is eliminated from the remainder of the game.
There can be very complex and difficult command chains, such as “The Teacher says: Arms up; The Teacher says: Arms down; Arms up.” Anyone ending with their arms up is eliminated, because a command that doesn’t begin with “The Teacher says” cannot be obeyed.
The way I play the game with small groups (2 – 3 students), is to set a limit to the commands and keep score so that everyone participates, even though students might break the rules. If one student breaks the rules, the others take one point.
Also, I ask my students to repeat the word while doing the action.
