The First Lesson

It is the first day of your new class and you don’t know how to break the ice. These icebreaker activities will help you have an unforgettable first lesson.

Getting to Know You Activities

The Star

This activity can be used for both school teachers and private tutors.

My students love this one! All you have to do is draw a star on the board or a piece of paper and then write answers to questions about you, the teacher, on every star angle.

For instance, my answers are, “34”, “Nick”, “Mila”, “Barcelona” and “Books”

The Star Activity to break the ice

Students have to guess the questions to the answers.

For example, the question to the answer “Barcelona” could be, Where do you live?, or Where do you work?

Students might be tempted to ask who’s Nick or Mila?  – You have to remind them that they have to get the correct question in order to see the meaning of the answers.

With this game, students get to know their teacher and vice versa. After you have demonstrated the game, have them draw their star and try to guess the questions to their answers.

Suitable for elementary, pre-intermediate and intermediate students. It can be used with children, teenagers and adults.

Two Truths, One Lie

Ask your students to come up with two things that are true about themselves and another thing that’s false.

Everyone tries to guess the right answer, which leads to stories about past life experiences and facilitates engaging and enjoyable conversation.

Suitable for pre-intermediate to proficient students. It can be used with children, teenagers and adults.

All about me! Lapbook

To complete this project, students:

  • Write informative text about their dream of what they will be when they grow up, their house, family and friends
  • Draw pictures.
  • Cut and glue cards and write the names of their family members
  • Write small sentences on cards with facts about themselves.

The Six-word Story

In six words, have students write down

  • what they think the course is about,
  • what they’re most excited about, or
  • what they’re hoping to accomplish by the end of it.

Whether you’re teaching in person or online, have students introduce themselves and share their six-word stories with the class for a quick and easy icebreaker.
