Tenses Practice & Review Card Game

There are many ways to practice the English tenses. One fun way to do so is with this English tenses practice and review card game. Read how to play the game, the cards and the variations of the game.

How To Play

  • Draw a Tense card. Read carefully the usage and how to form the Tense.
  • Then give the card to your Teacher or your opponent.
  • Draw a Word card. Read the word aloud.
    Try to remember: Is it a regular or an irregular verb?
  • Form a sentence with your word. – You have 45 seconds.
  • If the sentence is correct you receive 1 point. If not, then your opponent receives half a point.
  • Put the Word Card at the bottom of the deck if your sentence was correct. – If not, then put the Word card in your graveyard. 

If you encounter a Question Card:
If you encounter a Question Card, draw another Word Card. The sentence you must create must form a question.

If you encounter a Double Sentence Card:
If you encounter a DS Card then you must put the card on the bottom of the deck and draw another Word Card. You must form a Declarative and a Negative sentence with that word.
If both sentences are correct, then you will be awarded 2 points. If not, then
your opponent receives 1 point.

If you encounter a Double Sentence Card and a Question Card:
If that’s the case, you must form a Declarative, a
Negative and an Interrogative sentence with your Word card. If all of your sentences are correct, you receive 4 points!
If your Interrogative sentence is correct but your Declarative or Negative sentences are incorrect, you receive 3 point.
If the Declarative and/or Negative sentences are correct but your Interrogative sentence is incorrect you receive 2 points.
If none of the sentences you form are correct, then your opponent receives 1 point

Caution

It is advised to use point system only with students who are older than 16 years old and are not competitive since it sometimes leads to disagreements.

The Graveyard

Graveyard is the place you put your incorrect  words. At the end of the game, take the words and with the assistance of your teacher try to make sentences in all tenses with these words.

The End

The game ends when the Tense Cards are finished. The winner of the game is the one with the highest score!

Variations Of The Game:


Easy Mode (Beginner)
Draw and keep the Tense Card as a reference until you form a sentence. Take your time and form a sentence.


Moderate Mode (Intermediate)
Draw a Tense card, have a look on how to form the Tense and then give the card to your opponent.
You have 45 seconds to form a sentence + 30 seconds for each extra sentence (Double Point or Question card)


Hard Mode (Advanced)
The opponent draws the Tense card for you without sharing the details on how to form the Tense. You have 30 seconds to form a sentence + 30 seconds for each extra sentence (Double Point or Question card)

You have just learnt the irregular verbs and you want to practice them! Remove the regular verbs and go for it!
